Time for a restart

It’s a month into the season and there is little to show for it. The first two weeks provided for a couple of quick outings, but unfortunately an injury has put me on the sidelines since. While I was climbing up an embankment on my way to the stream, I tore a muscle in my calf which has prevented any further activity on the water.

One month may not seem like much, but in a season that only lasts five months it is a considerable setback and disappointment, but I’ve tried to make the most of it.

I’ve spent the time researching, exploring and planning some trips for next week, and I hope to start the season in earnest then. I’m still not healed, and run the risk of injuring it further if not careful, but I can’t wait idly by while there is opportunity at hand.

It has been a while since I’ve ventured north; last season I spent most of my time in rivers close to home, and while that is still fun, I think I’m overdue for a road trip. This time I plan on hitting the Beaver and Mad Rivers, both of which are known to be challenging waters, with rewards available for those who can manage to overcome the conditions such as narrow gorges, overhanging trees and roiling waters.

It might be more prudent to visit some less formidable challenges while I heal, but the lure of these rivers is too much as I’ve wanted to fish them for a few years now. When I arrive, if I find it to be too much, I have the luxury of being close to several other rivers that will offer easier conditions, so I won’t have made the effort for nothing.

In any case, I’m not going to worry about that today; today is a day for the last little stretch of rehab and then rest. If I worry about my fitness for the trips up north at all, I’ll do it tomorrow.
